What is Open University?

San José State University’s Open University program lets you enroll in regular curriculum university classes on a space-available basis if you are not enrolled at San José.  Registration is easy – you can usually confirm your space in class at the first meeting.

Open University is a way to attend San José State University if you are not interested in a degree program at this time, but want to take one or more classes. It also allows you to earn credits while you wait for admission. Open University students responded to a survey that they were taking Open University courses for these reasons:

  • to grow in their profession
  • to enrich their lives
  • to prepare for career change
  • to seek a job promotion
  • to give university life a try

As a participant in Open University, you receive credit for your course work. You may apply the credit toward a degree, within specified limits. Limitations are described in the Academic Information section in the paragraphs on undergraduate and graduate credit . Course prerequisites, if any, are indicated by a class note.
